North America’s Building Trades Unions Welcome TransCanada Refiling for Keystone XL Approval

WASHINGTON, DC – The following statement was released today in response to the filing by TransCanada for a Presidential Permit to build the Keystone XL pipeline:

"On behalf of the tens of thousands of skilled craftworkers poised to earn billions of dollars constructing the Keystone XL pipeline, North Amxerica’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) are thrilled to support TransCanada’s application for a Presidential permit.

"Nearly 10 years ago, NABTU was similarly excited about the prospects of building the world’s safest pipeline. Today, on the heels of a meeting with President Trump and his issuance of the memorandum to the Department of State, we are not only excited, but invigorated and optimistic, over the construction of this critical piece of energy infrastructure.

“It is refreshing that projects serving the national interest are now gaining Presidential support and expedited timelines to reach a permitting decision.  And because TransCanada has entered into a project labor agreement (PLA) for the construction of this pipeline, the public can rest assured that it will be done in the safest and most environmentally stringent manner possible.

“Further, we are delighted that the men and women who make their livelihoods in the construction industry will no longer suffer the indignity of having their chosen careers demeaned as nothing more than ‘temporary jobs’ by out-of-touch politicians.”
