So Far, Nuclear Industry Re-Vitalization Bears the Union Label

4/16/2010

The re-vitalization of the American nuclear power industry is considered a cornerstone towards achieving the twin objectives of reducing our nation’s reliance on foreign sources of energy and reducing global carbon emissions.  And those involved in the resurgence of nuclear power are turning to the value proposition offered by America’s Building Trades Unions.

In quick secession, UniStar, NRG Energy, and Southern Company each became signatory to the Building Trades’ new Nuclear Power Construction Labor Agreement.  The agreements cover the construction of two new reactors at each of the following: Calvert Cliffs Station (MD; South Texas Nuclear Project (TX); and Plant Vogtle (GA).

“This is a no-nonsense agreement that recognizes and makes a commitment to the nation importance of nuclear power,” said BCTD President Mark H. Ayers.  “The Nuclear Power Construction Labor Agenda implicitly addresses the unique challenges associated with nuclear power plant construction, and tackling problems previously encountered in the construction of nuclear power generation facilities.”
