President Obama today announced that federal loan guarantees will be provided by the U.S. Department of Energy for the construction of the Plant Vogtle nuclear power station in Georgia.
The President, speaking at the IBEW Local 26 Headquarters in Lanham, Maryland, committed to $8.33 billion in loan guarantees for the plant in Burke, Georgia.
The President's remarks focused on transitioning to clean energy technologies while creating jobs.
The project is scheduled to be the first U.S. nuclear power plant to break ground in nearly three decades and is expected to create nearly 3,500 onsite construction jobs and approximately 800 permanent jobs.
