By a vote of 9-2, the City Council of Worcester, MA approved a new "responsible contractor" law that represents a strong rebuke to the "race to the bottom" business model espoused by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) and its members.

A continuing and growing epidemic is occurring in the construction industry, whereby contractors who play by the rules are struggling to stay afloat while their competitors who systematically break the law profit. These unscrupulous contractors gain their edge by, among other tactics, exploiting and abusing undocumented workers; by misclassifying workers as "independent contractors"; or by simply paying workers under the table, if they pay them at all. And their workers are left vulnerable, facing tax liabilites, untreated injuries if they are hurt on the job, and financial hardship if they get laid off.
Union Plasterer Saves the Day for St. Louis Charity - 8/17/2012
Ray Leuthauser, a union plasterer from Cedar Hill, MO, found some money lost on the highway on August 13. He returned what he recovered, which happened to belong to a local charity. He then went to his union brothers and sister and helped raise the amount that couldn't be recovered. The money was for buying food to feed homeless people.
