General President Hite's Bio

William P. Hite
General President

William P. Hite is serving as General President of the United Association. Previously, he served as Assistant General President from 2001-2004 and has been a UA member for 37 years.

William is a third generation UA member. His grandfather started with the International Association in 1901. Fitters, steamfitters and gas fitters were in the International Association and plumbers were in the United Association. In 1911, the International Association and United Association were consolidated.

He has 3 brothers - 2 older and 1 younger, who are all members of Local 597. His son, Billy, Jr. is a 4th generation member of Local 597 and is an elected Delegate to the Chicago Federation of Labor Council. The UA is in his blood and William started his apprenticeship on January 1, 1968 and became a journeyman in 1972.

He was elected as a Delegate to his first UA Convention in 1981. In 1983, he was elected in his local union as a Delegate to the Chicago Federation of Labor and in 1986, he was elected Business Agent of Local 597.

In 1993, he was appointed Assistant Business Manager. He was elected Financial Secretary-Treasurer of Local 597 while still holding the appointed position of Assistant Business Manager.

At the 1996 UA Convention, he was elected International Representative and was assigned Illinois and portions of Indiana.

In June, 1999, he was appointed as Administrative Assistant to the General President. Then at the 2001 Convention, he was elected Assistant General President. He spent four years in that position. On December 1, 2004, he was elected General President.
